Has anyone been affected(their onions really). Just come back from lottie where i found most onions all distorted. looked on web and it seems likely to be this newish pest. most plots also seem infrected.

Hi Roger,
I don't grow onions myself, except for spring onions which seem ok so far, but according to www.defra.gov.uk you need to plant them later, i.e.after April, to avoid the problem. Also, you have to report any suspected outbreak to the Central Science Laboratory.
Apparently this pest was first found in a garden in Wolverhampton, in December 2003.

I've never liked Wolverhampton..... I was a hostage there for many years :-)

theres a notice up at my allotment in erdington about some pest, some worm or other? eel worm silverwireworm??? the advice is to remove the crop bag it and burn it when were allowed NOT to compost it or leave it, doesnt sound good, have just weeded my onions so am hoping pale n pastyness is down to lack of light... 1st yr trying aswell, hope theyre ok! theyre onion sets so fingers crossed as i was looking 4ward 2 them!

as time passes the onion leaves get very distorted and twisted and seem to stop growing.

I am a newbie.. our allotment is in Coventry and our onions seem fine, in fact we have pulled a few and they were superb.. I hadn't heard of this so we'll be on the look out.

that is good but beware. the little thing started wolverhampton/sandwell area two or so years ago.
