Hi Michael,
The first one is Kerria Japonica. Not sure about the lower one - will investigate!

Hi again,
I think no. 2 could be a variety of Mahonia, judging by the shape of its leaves and the little clusters of yellow flowers. Is it evergreen?

Hi Ann,

Yes it is evergreen. Quite small shiny holly-like leaves and thorns, glorious orange flowers in early spring.

Thanks for your help

Michael,
I've just discovered that "mahonia aquifolia" is also known as "holly-leaved barberry", though its flowers look more a deep yellow than orange. It belongs to the berberis family, and thorns were mentioned. It also produces clumps of small berries like little purple grapes with a whitish bloom on the skin. Does this tick any boxes?

Thanks for the advice ladies. the pleniflora is full of small berries that will hopefully be attractive to birds and so I will keep it.

The japonica is lovely and just needs to be moved to a more suitable place.

Thanks again!

Michael
